Quick answer

  • Standard UPI limit: ₹1,00,000 per day for most payments.
  • Higher NPCI caps apply to specific categories such as insurance, capital markets and travel.
  • Banks and apps can set their own lower limits and daily transaction counts.
  • Limits are separate from the new MDR charges.

What is the UPI transaction limit per day?

NPCI sets a default cap of ₹1,00,000 per day per user for regular UPI payments. Most banks apply this, though some cap individual transactions lower or limit the number of daily transfers (often 20). Check your bank's app for the exact figure.

Categories with higher limits

NPCI allows higher per-transaction limits for verified merchant categories. Under recent NPCI circulars, categories such as insurance, capital markets, travel, credit card bill payments and government e-marketplace payments can go up to ₹5 lakh per transaction, with tax payments, hospitals and educational institutions also enjoying higher caps. These are ceilings; your bank may apply lower figures.

Is there a UPI limit per month?

NPCI does not set a monthly cap. Limits are daily. A few banks or apps may apply their own monthly or velocity limits, particularly for new accounts.

Limits vs charges: don't mix them up

The new UPI charges do not change any limit. ₹2,000 is a fee threshold for merchants, not a payment cap. You can still pay ₹50,000 at a store; the store simply pays 0.4% MDR on it.

Bottom line

Plan on ₹1 lakh per day for regular UPI use, more for specific categories. For the exact number, your bank app is the source of truth.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum UPI transaction limit per day?

₹1,00,000 per day for regular payments under NPCI's default cap. Specific categories such as insurance, capital markets and travel have higher per-transaction ceilings.

Is there a UPI transaction limit per month?

NPCI sets daily limits, not monthly ones. Some banks may apply their own monthly limits, especially for new accounts.

Does the ₹2,000 rule limit UPI payments?

No. ₹2,000 is the threshold above which specified merchants pay MDR. It does not limit how much you can pay.
